Guide to Traditional Fall Flavors

Home » Guide to Traditional Fall Flavors

Fall doesn’t seem to be anyone’s favorite season, but the truth is a year without it would be a year without some of the most delicious treats known to mankind. There’s a particular set of ingredients that only seem to be available in fall, so we compiled a list of the best flavors of fall and some of the most iconic dishes you can serve up at your next party, celebration, or even dinner.

Fall Flavors: Pumpkin Galore

Pumpkin is closely related to butternut squash (more on that in a bit!), and just like it’s cousin, it has the versatility to be featured in many dishes. It goes well in both sweet and savory meals, and can even be served as a dessert or soup starter. Vegan and vegetarian folks are huge fans of pumpkin as it serves as a base to many vegan/vegetarian adaptations of our favorite meals, which include:

  • Toasted Pumpkin Seeds & Skin
  • Walnut & Pumpkin Praline Treats
  • Pumpkin Soup – this can be easily modified to add ham
          Pumpkin cheesecake
  • Traditional Pumpkin Pie

Apples & Pears

Apples and pears are available year-round, but their best season is undoubtedly fall. They are both very sweet fruits, so they are usually used to make desserts- with a few exceptions that is. Fall is a great time to start preparing for the coming festivities by staying healthy and in good shape. Yogurt and grain mixed with diced pears or apples should be at the top of all breakfast menus. Other great recipes include:

Traditional Apple Pie
Old Fashioned Pear Pie
French Toast Topped or
Stuffed with Apple & Pear
Apple & Pear Brown Betty
Apple & Pear Crumble
Caramel Apple Pork Chops

Cauliflower Power

Cauliflower has everything you need in a great recipe: it’s good on its own, as part of a bigger meal, it tastes great  and even looks cool. You can have it cold or hot, fried, steamed, boiled and even baked. The best thing about cauliflower is that it’s easy to mix with any other ingredients. Some of the most popular recipes out there include:
  • Cauliflower Cheese
  • Curried Cauliflower and Coconut Soup
  • Scallops with Cauliflower and Peanut Panade
  • Sweet Carrot and Cauliflower Pickles

Butternut Squash & Friends. – delicata & acorn squash

Like pumpkin, butternut squash (or simply squash) is a great ingredient to implement to your meals. You can even cook entire meals based from squash, and it makes both sweet and savory dishes on point. Delicata and Acorn Squash are two variations that are mostly available in fall season, and you can use them to prepare:

  • Butternut Squash Rice
  • Green Rabbit & Butternut Squash Curry
  • Roasted Butternut Squash on Pasta
  • Vegan Enchiladas
  • Vegan Burritos
  • Vegan EVERYTHING!
